I have to admit, I love MOOs. If you don't already know, a MOO is a
text-based virtual environment. The first MOO was created in 1991, which
means the technology outdates the web by a long shot. Being in a MOO is
quite like encountering an interactive book. Locales, people, and objects
are all based on description and interaction. MOOs are used for
socializing (and are far supirior to chat rooms for that purpose),
education, and gaming.

I was introduced to MOOs during my freshman year of college (Spring,
1996). I was taking an English course focusing on science-fiction
literature, and I ended up writing my final research paper on MOOs. The Purpose of
MOOs was my first foray into web creation. As part of the paper, I
created Rachel's Super MOO List to provide quick access to all the MOOs that
were around then. The original
list of 70 is still available.

I had characters on a dozen MOOs in 1996 through 1997 (all with the name
lilrachel), but then I put all my online energies into my Daily Diary. I continued to
maintain my MOO List because so many people used and linked to it. In
Spring, 2000, I rediscovered MOOing and my passion for it. I founded a mailing list for the
MOOing community and a notify list for updates to
my MOO List. I also took over maintenance of The MOOring. I am quickly
remembering what an obsession MOOing can be.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, all I can do is highly recommend
you pop on a MOO and try it for yourself. Learning the very basics of
MOOing is quite simple. You should know that certain communities aren't
expecially friendly to new MOOers (MOObies), but you can find a helpful
soul or two anywhere, and you are more than welcome to page me anytime.
The simplest way to start would be to click on the LambdaMOO link below.
Then type 'co guest' and after answering two questions, type 'help intro'
to get started.
